چکیده

This study addresses the rolling and lifting probabilities for sediment entrainment by incorporating the probabilistic features of the turbulent fluctuation and bed grain geometry. The lognormally distributed instantaneous velocity and uniformly distributed initial grain position, along with a relation between lift coefficient and particle Reynolds number, are used to extend the theoretical formulation of the entrainment probabilities in smooth-bed flows. The two threshold conditions identified herein enable us to precisely define the probabilities of entrainment in the rolling and lifting modes. The results obtained in this study coincide well with the published data. The lifting probability increases monotonously with the dimensionless shear stress u , which is consistent with the earlier results yet displays improved agreement with the experimental data. The maximum value of rolling probability, with a magnitude of 0.25, occurs at u '0.15. For u,0.05 ~or u.0.6), the rolling ~or lifting! probability makes up more than 90% of the total entrainment probability and thus can be used as an approximation to the total probability of entrainment. The proposed rolling and lifting probabilities are further linked to the two separate criteria for incipient motion to explore the critical entrainment probabilities. The results reveal that a consistent probability corresponding to the critical state of sediment entrainment cannot be found. DOI: 10.1061/~ASCE!0733-9429~2003!129:2~110! Entrainment Probabilities of Mixed-Size Sediment Incorporating Near-Bed Coherent Flow Structures

In this work we incorporate the effect of near-bed coherent flow structures into the entrainment of randomly configured mixed-size sediments. The fourth-order Gram–Charlier type probability density function (GC pdf) of near-bed streamwise velocity is employed to account for the higher-order correlations associated with turbulent bursting. A compilation of the published data over a wide range of...

A stochastic partial transport model for mixed-size sediment: Application to assessment of fractional mobility

[1] In this study we incorporate the existing concept of fractional mobility into a stochastic framework for modeling the partial transport of mixed-size sediment. The model predicts the fractional transport rates with parameters such as the long-run moving probability, mean particle velocity, and fractional mobility, all varying with the dimensionless effective shear stress. Movement of bed lo...

Pickup Probability of Sediment under Log-NormalVelocity Distribution

This work presents the formulation of the pickup probability for sediment entrainment under the log-normally distributed instantaneous velocity. Herein two mathematical approaches, namely the analytical method and the first-order approximation method, are employed in the theoretical derivation. The results are compared with the published experimental data and the previous pickup probability der...

Sediment transport by liquid surficial flow: Application to Titan

Sediment transport by surficial flow likely occurs on Titan. Titan is thought to have a volatile cycle, such as on Earth and likely in the past on Mars, which would entail surficial liquid flow. And surficial flow is implied in interpretations of Cassini–Hyugens data as showing fluvial channels, which would require sediment transport by surficial flow to form the observable features. We present...
